The effect of chisel length and associated pilot hole on delamination when drilling composite materials
نویسندگان
چکیده
Drilling-induced delamination often occurs both at the entrance and the exit of the workpiece during drilling of composite material. Investigators have studied analytically and experimentally that delamination in drilling can be correlated to the thrust force of the drill. With a pre-drilled pilot hole, the delamination can be reduced significantly. Early reference reported models of drilling-induced delamination, however, the effect of chisel edge length and pilot hole diameter on delamination is rarely discussed. The optimal range of chisel edge length with respect to drill diameter is derived in this paper. 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The use of fiber reinforced plastics has increased in the last decades due to their unique properties. Advantages of their use are related with low weight, high strength and stiffness. Drilling of composite plates can be carried out in conventional machinery with some adaptations. However, the presence of typical defects like delamination can affect mechanical properties of produced parts. In t...

The distinctive characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced plastics, like low weight or high specific strength, had broadened their use to new fields. Due to the need of assembly to structures, machining operations like drilling are frequent. In result of composites inhomogeneity, this operation can lead to different damages that reduce mechanical strength of the parts in the connection area. F...

SUMMARY The use of composite laminates in complex structures has increased significantly. However, there are still some issues when considering their use, mainly related with machining, leading to some difficulties and lack of acceptance. In this work, a methodology to evaluate drill geometry and feed rate based on thrust force and delamination extension is presented. INTRODUCTION For the past ...

Composite materials are widely employed in the naval, aerospace and transportation industries owing to the combination of being lightweight and having a high modulus of elasticity, strength and stiffness. Drilling is an operation generally used in composite materials to assemble the final product. Damages such as the burr at the drill entrance and exit, geometric deviations and delamination are...
متن کاملEffect of Drilling Parameters on Composite Plates Damage
Composites are more and more increasing their importance as one of the most interesting group of materials, because of their unique properties. Hole drilling operations are common in composite parts to facilitate fastener assembly. As composites are non-homogeneous this operation causes some damages like delamination and others that reduce bearing and fatigue strength of the composite part. A p...
